Hi, I’m Sam
I am a backcountry skier, hiker, climber, and photographer based on Vancouver Island, BC. I began photography by using my brother’s camera to take pictures for my high school’s lacrosse and rugby teams back in Aurora, Ontario. I moved to Victoria for university in 2024 and needless to say, my style has changed. I love skiing, hiking, climbing, and nature itself. Photography lets me capture those things and share them with others, and that’s just awesome.
My favourite picture is the one atop the Gallery page of this site. It is of Mount Cain’s southwest face. An area called ‘East Bowl’ (named that because it is to the east of the Mount Cain Ski Area, despite it being the southwest face of Cain). It’s the same photo hanging above my head in the picture on this page. As seen in that photo, it is hanging in the Mount Cain lodge. I like that photo because it was a perfect mix of hard work and skill, and being in the right place at the right time. A lot of touring and bootpacking and a great clear day with enough cloud to blunt the sun, keeping the highlights from being blown out. And it let me give something back to Mt. Cain and the people who make it run, which I really liked.
I am proud of every picture on this site. Please have a look through my gallery at your leisure. If something catches your eye, please reach out. I look forward to hearing from you.
